IV Portuguese Congress of Demography

Rethinking Demography Today: Constraints and strategies

In recent years, demographic concerns have been part of the social and economic debate in Europe and worldwide. Portugal is no exception in this matter as the accelerating aging of the population, the continuous declining of the fertility, the reversing of in and out migration, and the patterns of within migration have increased the awareness on these demographic challenges at national level. Thus, it is urgent to identify and understand the broad implications of these demographic changes and its social consequences: impact in health systems, social security and education, in the labor market, consumption patterns, investment and savings, in the economic growth and well-being of the population; from a broader point of view, these changes have implications on inter-generational relations, family formation and stability, distinct forms of partnership relations, motivations for fertility, individual decision making on health and active aging among others. This widespread range of implications demands the rethinking the role of Demography in the debate on a sustainable response to the demographic challenges ahead.

The IV Portuguese Congress of Demography invites participants to rethink demography. It aims at being a forum for discussion of academia and policy-oriented research in the fields of demography and population studies. We seek contributions that develop along methods and techniques of demographic analysis and social determinants of the demographic behavior that explain population dynamics. This covers other scientific fields such as sociology, economics, human geography, history, anthropology, or biology.
